Every summer close to 100 undergraduate students undertake research projects under the supervision of StFX faculty. With the exception of the Research NS Scotia Scholar Undergraduate Research Awards which are applied for through the Research NS website, applicants submit using the ROMEO Researcher Portal, with a deadline of NOON February 7 (when this date falls on a weekend or holiday, applications are due at NOON the next business day).
Events: Student Research Day
The annual Student Research Day at St. Francis Xavier University was started in March 2003 by Dr. Angie Kolen-Thompson, an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Kinetics. She credits the idea to her own graduate student research experiences from which she adapted to suit the students at StFX.
The Student Research Day gives students the opportunity to showcase their research or advanced studies undertaken as part of their upper-year classes, advanced majors, honours, or graduate programs. An evening is dedicated to displaying the students’ work in either an oral presentation or poster format with the presenting students available for a couple of hours to provide other students, faculty, staff, and interested community members with the opportunity to discuss the research presented.
Funding: NSHRF Scotia Scholars Award (Undergraduate)
The Scotia Scholars Awards provide financial non-refundable financial support of $5,000 for 8 months to high caliber research trainees engaged in health research at Nova Scotia universities. The objective of the Scotia Scholars Award is to support the development of the next generation of highly qualified researchers and leaders in Nova Scotia health research enterprise, and to encourage continued interest in health research careers. Funded applicants have the distinct honour of carrying the designation of Scotia Scholar.
University of New Brunswick
Event: Nursing Research Day is an opportunity for health care providers, educators, policy makers and community members to learn about the innovative research being done by students and faculty at University of New Brunswick.

The overall goal of this initiative is to bring researchers, faculty, students and other stakeholders from across disciplines and sectors together to build qualitative research capacity in the Saint John area. The objectives of the group will be to:
• Share expertise across disciplines, sectors and qualitative traditions
• Provide a forum to explore philosophical perspectives, methodology, methods and proposals
• Promote opportunities for networking and interdisciplinary work
• Share resources (e.g. references, transcription services)
• Support scholastic and professional growth of undergraduate students, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows (e.g. vetting research proposals or providing mock defences)

Opportunity: Many faculty hire undergraduates to work in their labs during the term through the university’s MUCEP program. Jobs are posted during the first week of each term. This is a great way to get a taste for research and make connections with faculty and students in the department.
Funding: This database contains information on internal and external funding opportunities for researchers at Memorial University.
Opportunities can be searched by keyword, strategic research theme, deadline or sponsor. Although every effort is made to ensure opportunities are assigned to the relevant theme, researchers are encouraged to search opportunities in all thematic areas.

There is often confusion between basic or fundamental research and applied research. Applied research deals with solving real-world problems that usually have direct commercial application. Basic or fundamental research is carried out to increase understanding of theories and fundamental principles and often times the end results have no direct or immediate commercial benefits. In applied research, activities such as prototype development, feasibility studies, clinical trials, technical consultation and problem solving are often involved.
How does the ARC help
The ARC facilitates the development of applied research projects from start to finish by participating in these activities:
- evaluating and launching projects
- identifying funding opportunities and help to prepare applications for R&D assistance and tax credits
- assisting with the management of projects
- arranging faculty release time to allow project participation
- providing participants to work on projects
- liaising with Facilities Management to provide work space, laboratories, and other facilities within the College
